Well, we’ve come to the end of my Thyroid Series (though I'm sure you'll hear plenty more from me about the thyroid in the future). If you’re just tuning in, we have discussed the following so far:

·      Why people with underlying thyroid deficiency often get sick at the change of season (read here).

·      How a healthy thyroid can help you look and feel younger (read here).

 ·      How an underlying thyroid dysfunction can manifest in elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels (read here).

Finally, today I’m going to talk about addressing the thyroid naturally and what I do in my practice to help patients get their lives back.

4 Ways of Addressing Your Thyroid Naturally

1.     Identifying the cause - while this seems very elementary, it is often overlooked. In my previous posts, I mention that while not everyone with a thyroid issue has abnormal blood work, you can be deficient or have a sluggish thyroid and have very real, life-altering signs and symptoms. I like to think of health as a big circle made up of many linked chains, if one of the links goes bad the others ones are impacted. Often times I see patients in my office with a certain presentation or disease. Yet, while it may seem like one organ system is the problem, this organ system may just be overworking to compensate for the real issue. For example, it may seem as though you have a thyroid problem when in reality you have unstable blood sugar. High blood sugar can suppress the thyroid.

Blood work or signs and symptoms will indicate that it’s the thyroid, yet treating your thyroid will never bring about full resolution and healing unless you address your blood sugar levels first.

Have you thought about the fact that your "thyroid disease" may not be what it seems?

2.     Address the underlying allergies-we live in a very unclean environment, with pollution and chemicals and pesticides, etc. So, it's important to make sure that our bodies are at their healthiest to withstand the stressors that we have no control over. How does identifying your allergies play a role? If you have a persistent chronic allergy, it stresses out your gut, which causes inflammation, leaky gut and ultimately autoimmune disease. Your thyroid is especially sensitive to inflammation and autoimmune disease produced in your gut.

Often times we see gluten allergies with thyroid patients. Gluten increases the antibody production in our blood stream (antibodies attack healthy tissues such as your thyroid) making it very difficult to find a healthy hormone balance and regulate your thyroid.

So the environmental stressors can play a role in your health. But you can fight this by making your body the healthiest it can be by simply addressing any allergies you might have. Gluten is just one of the allergens that impacts your thyroid. In my office I identify not only allergies, but sensitivities. Let me explain. In order to have a diagnosed allergy, your blood has to have a certain number of inflammatory markers. If you’re not actively taking in the allergens (example: Celiac disease) your markers will go down. But does that mean that you should continue eating gluten? Of course not! Through using muscles testing, in my office, I’m able to identify sensitivities BEFORE they become allergies and before you get sick from them. Muscle testing is about 2% sensitive vs. your typical blood test which requires 60-70% to pick up an allergy.

3.     Addressing your emotions - I cannot stress this enough. Emotions impact our physical health on such an important, real level. In my office I talk to my patients about how different emotions affect different organ systems. For example, have you ever been so nervous about upcoming exam, or a situation in life, that you got a belly ache? That’s one link between your stomach and worry. Persistent worrying can actually cause digestive disturbances over time. In practice, we address emotions through many emotional techniques, acupuncture systems, chiropractic care, supplement/herbs, etc., to make sure we address the underlying cause instead of simply giving a patient enzymes for the rest of their lives.

So just as stomach problems can be brought on by worry, other systems all over the body have emotions related to them. Have you ever thought that your problem can be both emotional and physical in nature?

4.     Taking the right products - I often have patients come into my office with a lot of products that they are taking. Often times they have heard that certain things are helpful or had a store clerk recommend a vitamin or herb that they think will help them. Guys, it's important to know why you’re taking what you’re taking. A good rule of thumb is that just because its natural doesn’t mean its safe. Just because your friend is taking something doesn’t mean that you should. While completely innocent and well meaning, people can recommend great products that aren't necessarily right for you. Why? Because we all are different, with different cell make up and physiology and biochemistry and genetics. So, we all need our individual approach. That’s why vitamins and herbs and homeopathy should be prescribed to you for a specific reason by a health care professional. They will give it for a specific cause AND will know that there won’t be any serious, potentially life-threatening cross reactions with something else that’s going on in your body. I’m not saying this is to scare you, but it's important to understand why you’re taking what you are. This is why in my office I muscle test all products I give to my patients to ENSURE that they both need them and their body can use them. In order to promote true healing and not just alleviation of symptoms.

So, to sum it up, if you’re struggling with your thyroid issue, it's not only important but critical to understand whether your thyroid is in fact the reason why your thyroid isn’t working. Or is it something else? Get to the root cause and don't put a bandage over the issue.

Cholesterol and Your Thyroid

Welcome to my thyroid blog series. If you’re just tuning in this week we covered why individuals with sluggish thyroids (not always disease, but functioning) may suffer at the change of season (you can read this blog here), and how your thyroid impacts the aging process. This impacts how your hair, skin and nails look as a result (you can find this blog here).

Today I want to address another hot topic of conversation and something that I see incredibly often in the office: elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

In the medical community, statins are prescribed incredibly often. But did you know that you can change the way that your blood work looks through natural medicine?

That’s right, by dealing with underlying cause of cholesterol and triglycerides you can help to aid normal levels.

While your thyroid isn’t the only factor in dealing with cholesterol and triglycerides, it’s a critical step if you want consistency in your blood levels.

So, it goes something like this. Your thyroid is in charge of carbohydrate metabolism. If the thyroid function is sluggish/not up to par, it will burn carbohydrates and never get to burning dietary fats. Thus, excess carbohydrates will be stored in your fat cells as triglycerides, they will also be deposited in blood vessel walls and in general blood circulation.

You might say to yourself, “well, my blood work for my thyroid is looking fine, but I still have elevated cholesterol/triglycerides.” As I mentioned before, it takes about 60-70% function loss for blood work to demonstrate an issue, so you have to go more than just off of your blood work. You can read how I evaluate thyroid in my first blog, here.

If you’re struggling with elevated cholesterol/triglycerides and aren’t sure why and what to do about it, come in and have us evaluate your thyroid. It could be your missing piece of the puzzle!

How Thyroid Health Helps You Look and Feel Better (and Younger)

This is the second post in a series about the thyroid and its impact on our overall health. The first post, which covered getting sick at the change of season, can be found here.

Today, I want to discuss a topic that most of us secretly care about but may be too humble or embarrassed to talk about. The issue of growing old gracefully and keeping our looks as long as we can.

Let’s be honest, we all want to look good. Did you know that changing your hormones can actually help you age SLOWER and make you look younger for MUCH longer?

That’s right. Having a healthy thyroid can do more for your hair, nails, skin, and weight than simply picking out a nice outfit.

We all want to look good and keep our looks as long as possible—and do it NATURALLY. Women pay top dollars for anti-aging treatments from facials to Botox, and even reconstructive surgery. But what if I told you there is a natural way to slow down aging?

There is. It’s called balancing how your thyroid functions.

How Thyroid Impacts Aging

The thyroid plays a large role in the aging process. When running optimally, it can keep you looking youthful. But a low thyroid function can make you age quicker. How?

Let’s explore specific ways the thyroid impacts aging.

Skin-The thyroid gland regulates circulation in the body. So, if your thyroid is running slow, it takes longer for skin cells to regenerate. Because your skin cells are not nourished with nutrients from your blood stream, your skin will look rough, dry, and scaly (often times people mistake this for eczema when in fact it’s hypothyroidism). This can also cause you to develop wrinkles much sooner than your counterparts with normal thyroid function.

Hair-Low circulation also prevents nutrients from getting to your hair follicles, causing hair growth issues. Additionally, we also see iron deficiency anemias and low mineral status in many patients with thyroid issues, which compounds the issue, causing slower hair growth, hair to fall out quicker, and hair to be course and brittle. It is very common to see the loss of the lateral third of your eyebrows with hypothyroidism/Hashimoto’s as well.

Body Aches and Pains-It is commonplace to have body aches and pains because of low thyroid hormone production. Often this is found in those with elevated antibodies-in Hashimoto’s or Graves. This can feel debilitating especially at the change of a weather season.

Brain Fog/Low Energy-Low level of energy and brain fog are also frequent findings with low thyroid activity. You need a proper level of thyroid hormone to activate brain activity. When this doesn’t happen, you can experience “loss of words,” lack of clarity in thinking, and feeling overall slower. It is very common for newborn babies to be tested for thyroid activity to ensure it’s working properly as low thyroid activity can lead to major developmental issues.

Sleep-Sleep is foundational to longevity, healthy metabolism function, proper recovery, and slower aging. When your thyroid isn’t working properly, it is very common to see sleep issues in patients. We know that poor sleep leads to bad metabolic health, which causes premature aging. Getting your thyroid fixed will lead to better quality of sleep.

How to Address Thyroid Issues

So, what can you do if you think you might have a thyroid issue?

First, I always recommend my patients get tested by a functional medicine doctor, as they will go out of their way to do a comprehensive panel of your thyroid markers. You should at LEAST have the following tested to ensure good thyroid activity: TSH, free T3, free T4, rT3, TPO/TGA and TSI, at the very least. If you do not do all of these, something will likely be missed.

So, let’s say you’ve found out that your thyroid isn’t working well. Now what?

I would always advise working with a functional medicine doctor to figure out the root cause of your thyroid disorder (no, it’s not always genetic).

Additionally, here are 3 things you can do today to feel better:

1.     Skip the wheat-there is a large correlation between wheat protein and thyroid protein in what’s known as molecular mimicry. If your body cannot process wheat well, it will mount an immune response to it because it mimics molecules of thyroid so well, it will start attacking your thyroid. Skip the wheat for at least 30 days to really tell the difference. Research shows that majority of thyroid patients, even if they aren’t celiac, will commonly have wheat sensitivity. Wheat is also known to increase thyroid antibodies.

2.     Practice stress-relieving techniques-we know that the higher the stress is it will suppress thyroid activity. Practice meditation techniques, walking, and spending time with people who bring you joy!

3.     Supplementation-there are often very common supplement deficiencies found in thyroid patients. These deficiencies include selenium, vitamin D, iron, etc. Some of my favorite products which have helped my patients in the past have been Cataplex E (selenium), Cataplex D (vitamin D), Neuroplex (minerals/B vitamins which include iron) along with Ashwaganda, known to be amazing for thyroid health—but be careful if you are on thyroid meds because this bad boy works extremely well). You can purchase all of these at this link: https://drveronikavlasov.standardprocess.com/products  (always make sure to check in with your doctor to ensure any vitamin/herb is the right fit for your medical needs). Top 5 Things to Look for in a Healthcare Provider

Picking the right doctor is one of the best things you can do for your health. But how do you know if you’ve made the right choice?

Here are the top 5 things you should look for in a healthcare provider:

1.     They conduct a full intake and physical exam.

Healthcare providers do their job when they get your full health history along with your family’s history, and any trauma and hospitalizations you’ve experienced. They will do a proper physical assessment, including vitals, and any other assessments of joints, neurological, internal, X-rays or imaging that you might require. They’ll be willing to do these tests whether it’s convenient or not. It’s important for any healthcare provider to be thorough and not skip steps to ensure that they’ve gathered all of the data that they need in order to make a competent diagnosis and to come up with a precise treatment plan.

2.     They have a longterm plan for your health and can explain it to you.

If asked, your doctor can share with you what they are trying to accomplish and how they plan to get there. They can explain what they are doing and why in non-medical terms so it makes sense to you. “Because I’m a doctor” isn’t good enough. Ask why you’re getting certain treatments! You have the right to know as a patient.

3.     They empathize.

They put themselves in your shoes. They come from a point of “what if that was my mother/father/sister/brother or me” on the table, how would I like to be treated? And then they treat their patients with that same dignity and respect.

4.     They listen to your input and are flexible with their care.

A treatment plan shouldn’t be entirely one-sided. A great healthcare provider will care what you have to say and take into account any concerns that you bring to the table. They will adjust their treatment plan to meet your goals and desires.

5.     They know their limits.

No doctor is infallible and omniscient. They should know when it’s best to surrender your care to another doctor or get a second opinion. After all your care isn’t about them, it’s about you and what’s best for your health.

These are the principles I strive to practice with my own patients.

Thyroid Health: Why Do I Feel Sick When the Seasons Change?

According to the American Thyroid Association, it is estimated that about 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease. Of those 20 million, up to 60% are unaware of their condition. What does that mean to you? Perhaps you have symptoms that you’ve been “just dealing with,” unaware that they could be related to the thyroid.

The good news is that this can be helped. In this series, I’m going to explore some of the common (and lesser known symptoms) and explain how we can alleviate them. We’ll outline different ways that we can evaluate and help the thyroid naturally(read here). These can help you not only identify the dysfunction, but also address it before it becomes a disease.

Today I want to talk about thyroid health and why we feel worse at the change of each season.

Feeling sick when the seasons change

Let’s back up. The role of our thyroid is to regulate the rate of metabolism in our body. Why is metabolism so important?

You need a very close range of metabolism in the body in order for proper physiological mechanisms to occur like digestion, hormone balance, energy production of the whole body (yikes, that’s important), immune system responses, nervous system, etc. Therefore, if your metabolism is not kept in a close range, major processes of your body do not happen. Since this compromises your existence as a living being, all of these mechanisms have to go on AT ALL TIMES.

There are literally thyroid receptors (which take in thyroid hormone) all over the body in order to keep this balance going at all times. At the change of season, when the thermal stress challenges this balance, your thyroid needs to adapt at constant rate to account for all the ups and downs in the temperature. If this conversion doesn’t occur at appropriate rate, we start feeling sick. Therefore, symptoms that get worse at the change of weather, particularly in the fall and spring, are typically associated with thyroid gland being sluggish.

Thus, often times we see patients whose joint aches gets worse, whose immune system drops (more on that later), who get allergies, depression, constipation, fatigue, migraines, elevated cholesterol/triglyceride levels, dry skin, especially at the change of season, could be associated with sluggish thyroid gland (even in the presence of normal blood work) and often feel much better with some thyroid support.

When evaluating the thyroid, I often do the following:

1.     Take a thorough history and physical exam. If there is a family predisposition to thyroid disease is it more likely than not that you might be susceptible to thyroid sluggishness (even if its not diagnosed). Physical exam findings are critical, and also reveal important components to underlying issues.

2.     Blood work. As I mentioned blood work only demonstrates deficiency or disease at 60-70% dysfunction, meaning that you could be having very real and very uncomfortable issues at 30% without a formal diagnosis. However, blood work is a piece of a puzzle we always consider. The more information that we have, I typically like to see a full thyroid panel including antibody levels to see where the patient is at.

3.     Applied Kinesiology muscle testing. Muscle testing, unlike blood work, is about 2% sensitive, meaning that it tests for predispositions and deficiency instead of simply looking at disease. Why is this helpful? It’s helpful in order to help a patient recover and not continue down a path of developing disease. If we can catch patients early in their deficiencies we can often help their bodies heal, instead of letting it go with a “watch and wait” method. With Applied Kinesiology, we’re able to not only identify the deficiency but find nutrition which help to support that system. Which means that you don’t have to continue feeling bad, but can help support your system no matter where you are in the spectrum, leading you to feel much better.

As you can tell you don’t have to continue to be part of that statistic, if you have any commonly known symptoms, especially if your symptoms get worse at the change of season, give us a call or click the button below and come in for an evaluation. You don’t have to keep struggling!

5 Ways of Naturally Addressing Your Chronic Back Pain

Back pain is a commonplace condition that many people “just deal with” for years without addressing. There are different ways that patients try to deal with back pain before they typically come in to see me. Medication is often one and physical therapy is another. Although those two therapies can be effective in relieving or strengthening muscle, I often find that they do not solve the root cause, and result in a longer recovery time.

Back pain is the number one reason that patients come into my office. Even if you’ve had back pain for years it can be solved using these 5 techniques. Of course, this isn’t all-encompassing, but it’s about 90% effective.

1. Reducing inflammation:

many times, chronic back pain has “always been there” and people don’t ever remember it not being there. This could be due to injury or not. Even after an injury, your body should heal. If you are still having pain years after an injury, you probably have a different problem: INFLAMMATION. When patients come in for back pain, whether neck, mid or low back, we always address this component. Without it you will never get full and complete resolution. Typically, this involves addressing your diet as there might be foods that are aggravating your system and raising your inflammation. This includes processed foods, sodas, sugar, wheat, dairy, etc. It’s impossible to say here exactly what YOUR aggravating foods are, as everyone is different and your diet sensitivities will be individualized. Addressing blood sugar goes far in addressing back pain. There is a correction that we do in the office using muscles testing and acupuncture to reset blood sugar circuits. This makes a significant difference. If your blood sugar is unstable, your inflammation will be HIGH as the sky! This isn’t just for diabetics or pre-diabetics, most of my patients walk in with unstable blood sugar and aren’t aware of it!

2. Getting adjusted/ addressing the underlying trauma

as mentioned above, sometimes there has been trauma to your back; whether that’s a car accident or a fall. Of course, you need to rule out anything significant, but after you’ve assured yourself that there aren’t those components, there are a number of muscle/joint techniques that we do in office that help to reset the muscles, joints and ligaments to make sure that neurologically they are “on” or working properly.

Often times after an injury your body will temporarily “shut off” the use of certain muscle groups because they are weakened from the injury. Other muscles/joints will pick up the slack for the weakened one and overwork. This causes an imbalance in the system, which creates inflammation and ultimately pain.

Improperly moving spine and or extremities also send improper signaling back to the brain. Therefore, if you see a chiropractor and get your spine and joints aligned you’ll be on your way to decreasing inflammation in your joints and reducing pain. Did you know that a chiropractic adjustment stimulates endorphins, which not only cause you to be happy, but also reduce pain?

3. Adrenal gland health:

This seems like a very odd thing to mention, but once I explain it will make a lot more sense. Adrenal gland exhaustion, or adrenal fatigue, as it’s known, is INCREDIBLY common. Adrenal glands help to support life, from secreting hormones to regulating our fight or flight response during times of stress. Most patients walk in with high fight or flight mode without the ability to relax. This is due to adrenal gland exhaustion. If I was betting, I would say that most people suffer from some form of adrenal fatigue. Adrenal glands store a high amount of vitamin C in them. Why is that important? You need vitamin C for a many different functions in the body, from immune support to antioxidant support. It also helps to rebuild collage fibers, which are a foundational aspect of your ligaments. Why is that important? And how does that relate to back pain? Well, adrenal glands are sensitive little dudes. They are sensitive to the foods that we eat, to the amount of sleep that we get, to the hormone imbalance that we have, to INFLAMMATION in our body, to stress levels (no one has that, right?), etc.

When the barrage of stressors start to impact the adrenal glands they start to need more and more Vitamin C to stay in the game. When the supply ends in the glands and the blood stream they begin pulling from other sources (like ligaments) because, after all, that’s another great source of Vitamin C. So, over time your Vitamin C supply in the collagen fibers gets low and guess what happens? Your ligaments start to not be able to support your joints and you get too much motion, which causes inflammation and PAIN. So, when I address back pain in patients I ALWAYS assess adrenal health. It’s one of the most common reasons why back pain occurs, specifically for the neck and low back.

4. Mineral and vitamin deficiencies:

After we look at adrenals we always assess mineral and vitamin needs. Why is that common and relevant? Most of us do not eat balanced diets, which means that we’re not getting all of the vitamin and minerals from our foods, causing deficiency and weakening our systems. In order to reduce inflammation, support the adrenal glands, support blood sugar you need to give your body building blocks until it can heal. Typically when patients first come in they need more support and as they get healthy we only give them a few supplements to help support their systems.

5. Mental/emotional stress:

Yes, we can all agree that stress is bad. But did you know that you can continue to have a stress response from mental/emotional trauma, no matter how small, years down the line? That’s right, our brain and nervous system develops patterns that impact us down the line. So, what do we do about it? There are a couple solutions. The first one we think of very quickly. Counseling and therapy are great ways to deal with, examine and develop tools and healing from past pain.

However, we also need to reset the nervous system and the brain and help to rewire the firing patterns. So, now whenever you see a dog (let’s say you were bitten by a dog) you don’t flinch or have an irrational reaction. Now, let’s say a man/woman hurt you, whether emotional or physical. Your brain remembers it and down the line, and we struggle to have proper healthy bonding patterns with our friends and family. Doing mental/emotional treatments in my office is not a substitute for therapy but it allows us to down-regulate the fight or flight response of our nervous system by doing acupuncture and muscle testing so that you’re not constantly triggered by the outside world. So, in reality, we need both!

I hope this post was helpful in getting you to think of different reasons why people have back pain and of natural ways to approach back pain. If you’ve been struggling with pain without complete and total resolution give us a call or click below, there is hope and answers our there! There is no reason to continue to struggle and live with chronic persistent pain!

The Brain/Body Explanation of Why You "Freak Out" and Don't Know Why.

dr-veronika-vlasov-chiropractor-elmhurst-il-best-chiropractor-anxiety.jpg

Have you ever overreacted to a simple, non threatening situation like a new relationship or job change? Afterwards, did you wonder why your reacted was so strong? Have you overreacted to a simple disagreement? Are you puzzled as to why you choose to be in unhealthy relationships? Do you get anxious easily over daily tasks, like meeting with friends? Does the prospect of change produce fear.

Our brain and bodies have a memory of everything that’s ever happened to us, especially when those incidents have been traumatic or unpleasant. This is true for episodes we face as adults. But the tough experiences become more ingrained in us when they occur during childhood. These incidents often shape and form the way that our bodies and nervous system react to everyday triggers. They cause us to view new life situations as threatening. Sometimes an everyday situation will trigger you. Afterwards, you’re left wondering “Why did I overreact? Why is change so hard for me?”

Our bodies respond to stimuli both emotionally and physiologically. Triggers cause you to feel anxiety, dread, worry, or even depression symptoms. But you can also experience an internal spike in stress hormones and hormone imbalance, trouble digesting foods, sleep difficulties, suppressed immune system, increased inflammation in the body which will cause joint pain, migraines and the list goes on. So, if you’ve struggled with chronic unresolved symptoms over and over again, whatever that may be, you might have underlying stress patterns which your body has memorized.

STRESS HAS PHYSICAL CONSEQUENCES

In my office, I do a number of different emotional stress-relieving techniques which help your body to process and let go of long-term (and short-term) stress or trauma patterns. Using different techniques, we are able to find the root cause and try to clear it. This allows your body to finally move forward and not respond to stimuli negatively, both emotionally and physically. Consequently, you will finally have the freedom not only from emotional symptoms, but also from physical ones too. It helps give you a fresh start.
